Osteopathy

Any obstruction that impedes the circulation of fluids within the body is the focus of osteopathic assessment and treatment. These impediments may take the form of structural or non-structural blockages.

A natural medicine which aims to restore function in the body by treating the causes of pain and imbalance. To achieve this goal the Osteopathic Manual Practitioner relies on the quality and finesse of his/her palpation and works with the position, mobility and quality of the tissues.

Any obstruction that impedes the circulation of fluids within the body is the focus of osteopathic assessment and treatment. These impediments may take the form of structural or non-structural blockages. Structural or physical impediments include generalized twists, curves, or pulls within the body, as well as specific misaligned bones, organs, or tissues. These faults may affect the control of systems that regulate fluid circulation and the life-sustaining and regulatory products that the fluids carry.

Over time, the body gradually loses its ability to efficiently self-regulate and self-heal. Some of this loss may be due to the aging process, trauma, accident, illness, surgical scarring, childbirth, repetitive activity, the prolonged influence of gravity on posture, or the cumulative effects of mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual stresses.

In most cases, the patient has had some combination of the above experiences. These experiences may manifest themselves locally at or near the original site of occurrence or, more frequently, the symptoms may be felt far from the site of occurrence. For this reason, the Osteopathic Manual Practitioner must assess the whole body. Although treatment may be directed toward several specific areas, the effect of that treatment is often felt throughout the body. It is for this reason that the Osteopathic Manual Practitioner also treat the whole body.

Orthotics and Customized Shoes

Othotics are footware inserts designed specifically for you to fit inside your shoe, which will help the bones and tendons in your feet and lower leg function efficiently.

Othotics are footware inserts designed specifically for you to fit inside your shoe, which will help the bones and tendons in your feet and lower leg function efficiently. For many patients, they are effective in reducing pain in the feet, knees, legs and hips and even the lower back.

Upon referral from your physician, we will work with you to evaluate your need and ensure that orthotics is a viable option for the treatment of your pain. We then conduct a series of tests and measurements to ensure that your custom-designed corrective device works to your individual needs.

We will discuss your symptoms with you, and ask about your overall medical history and normal types of footwear. Your lifestyle is also a factor in finding the perfect design. We include a gait assessment/analysis to fully determine precisely how you walk and to see if there are any abnormalities in your posture or walk. A 3-D cast that captures the contours of your feet is taken and your custom orthotic is then created.

Orthotics will be made in a lab at The Orthotic Group, well known manufacturer of custom orthotics across Canada. We will then conduct a fitting of your new device and again check your gait and posture. If you require customized shoes we are able to get them for you through the same company. Their shoe selection is wide and carefully chosen to help suffering feet, as well as to prevent negative developments in your feet.

Massage therapy consists primarily of hands-on manipulation of the soft tissues of the body, specifically, the muscles, connective tissue, tendons, ligaments and joints for the purpose of optimizing health.

Many of our patients are helped by a combination of therapies, and massage therapy is often a part of the process, with hands-on manipulation of the body’s soft tissues we are able to normalize those tissues, favourably influence the circulation of blood and lymph, reduce tension in the muscles and enhance movement in the body.

Massage therapy is based on the science of how the body’s systems work and is found to be effective in the healing process and in the restoration of movement. It can relieve muscle spasms and greatly enhance a patient’s range of motion. It is an excellent therapy for the promotion of deeper and easier breathing and to relieve the stress of chronic pain from conditions or injuries.

Massage therapy treatment has a therapeutic effect on the body and optimizes health and well-being by acting on the muscular, nervous and circulatory systems. Physical function can be developed, maintained and improved; and physical dysfunction and pain and the effects of stress can be relieved or prevented through the use of Massage Therapy.

Laser Therapy

We successfully treat a range of conditions using Light/Laser application as the prime healing force in therapy. The success of this approach is because Defined Customizable Protocols are used.

We successfully treat a range of conditions using Light/Laser application as the prime healing force in therapy. The success of this approach is because Defined Customizable Protocols are used. Protocols are unique and developed skillfully over the last 25+ years.

The technology utilizes superluminous and laser diodes to irradiate diseased or traumatized tissue with photons. These particles of energy are selectively absorbed by the cell membrane and intracellular molecules, resulting in the initiation of a cascade of complex physiological reactions, leading to the restoration of normal cell structure and function. The process is curative and therefore results in the elimination of symptoms including pain. In addition, it enhances the body’s immune system response and facilitates natural healing. The therapy is completely safe and has no adverse side effects.

Cold laser” or Low Level Light Therapy (LLLT) is one of the most modern scientific treatments to be introduced to the field of physiotherapy, and we are proud to offer it to our patients at Sherway Physiotherapy and Laser Therapy in Etobicoke. We use exclusively Bioflex Laser Therapy system. Also known as soft laser, laser acupuncture and therapeutic laser, it is particularly effective in promoting the rapid healing of injuries by simply improving the circulation, decreasing the swelling and inflammation, and repairing the tissue.

The process involves directing low levels of red and infrared light, and laser probe to the painful area. The light improves the blood flow to the impacted cells and tissues, the patient experiences relief of pain. Originally approved for use to help professional athletes return to their games as quickly as possible, it has now found a place for broader use with patients in modern physiotherapy clinics, enabling us to treat variety of painful conditions such as back pain, neck pain, joint pains, limited mobility and lack of strength, pains related to sprains, strains, fractures, wear and tear, arthritis, nerve injuries, etc.

We have had excellent responses from introducing this treatment option to our patients. It is quick, painless and effective. Patients only feel gentle warmth on the area targeted, generally relaxed and comfortable. Laser Therapy is used frequently in combination with other therapies as needed to ensure our patients improve.
